Wanaka is where the Amigos story all began! Originally opening in 1995 at different premises, Amigos Wanaka shifted to its current site in 2013. Since then, the restaurant has seen multiple renovations and as our foundation, has paved the way for our unique mex experience to expand to other locations around the South Island. Boasting a beautiful deck with epic mountain views, Amigos Wanaka has become a favourite spot for locals and tourists alike. In fact, the owners are now serving the grandchildren of those they served when it all began.

Amigos Cromwell was the first time Amigos left idyllic Wanaka. Originally opening in 2016 at what was previously a space for pop up shops, Amigos Cromwell was an instant hit. It was a very hands on build, and set the scene for what it would look like when Amigos spread to other locations. Fast forward, our Cromwell site is heavily involved in the local community and has become a favourite for locals and those travelling through in the summer.

In 2018, Amigos Alexandra became the newest branch to join the family of Amigos restaurants. Located in the former post office and then bank, the building itself tells an incredible story. The old foot and a half thick vault door from the bank is actually still at the site, and you can see it when walking back to the bathrooms. In addition, the old “Pay Here” sign from the bank is still up by our till. We love a good story, and from the sideways schist cladding to the vault door, there is no shortage of history in this site.

Amigos Invercargill opened in 2020 and was the first time Amigos left Otago and we made our way to the big city. Located in what was the Subway on Dee Street, we’ve transformed it into an intimate, but beautiful space. There’s even a little cubby tucked away in the restaurant, which is perfect for a date night. As we like to keep artefacts from the history of our sites, we also have the “We Are Open” sign from the old Subway. We are really excited to see what happens here next as the local area continues to develop!

Amigos Dunedin opened in 2021 and is the latest addition to the Amigos restaurants. Set on Bath Street, just one block from the Octagon, this area is extremely exciting and on the way up. Decked out with awesome decor, including an “outdoor” area on the inside and doors hanging from the ceiling, there is no shortage of unique things to spot while dining with us. With such a central location, it’s the perfect place to come in for lunch during work!
