What started in Wānaka has grown into a collection of lively Amigos restaurants across the South Island. Each location has its own personality, but you’ll always find the same welcoming atmosphere, bold flavours, and relaxed vibe.
Wanaka is where the Amigos story began.
After first opening in 1995 at a different site, our Mexican restaurant moved to its current home at 71 Ardmore Street in 2013. Since then, it has continued to evolve through a number of renovations, while Wānaka has remained the original home of Amigos as we’ve grown across the South Island.
With a sunny deck and stunning mountain views, Amigos Wanaka has become a favourite gathering place for both locals and visitors. These days, we’re even serving the grandchildren of some of our original customers, a reminder of just how long Amigos has been part of the community.
Cromwell marked the first move beyond our Wānaka roots.
Opened in 2016 in a former pop-up retail space, our Cromwell Mexican restaurant quickly became a lively hub for locals and visitors alike. It was a hands-on project that helped define the style and atmosphere now seen across other Amigos restaurants.
Ten years later, in 2026, the restaurant expanded into the neighbouring premises, nearly doubling its seating capacity and creating even more space for good food and good times.
Today, Amigos Cromwell remains a well-loved part of the community and a popular stop for both locals and holidaymakers passing through Central Otago.
Amigos Alexandra opened in 2018 in a building with plenty of stories to tell.
Once home to both a post office and a bank, the historic building on Tarbert Street still carries reminders of its past and has become one of our most distinctive Mexican restaurants.
Guests can spot the original vault door, more than a foot thick, on the way to the bathrooms, along with the old “Pay Here” sign still hanging near the till. From the sideways schist cladding to the character-filled interior, there’s history in every corner.
The Alexandra restaurant helped inspire our love for finding unique buildings with a story to tell — something that has shaped the Amigos locations that have followed.
Amigos Invercargill opened in 2020, marking our first step beyond Otago.
Located on Dee Street in what was once a Subway restaurant, the space has been completely transformed into an intimate and character-filled dining spot.
From cosy corners to a tucked-away cubby, the restaurant has its own unique atmosphere. In true Amigos style, a piece of the building’s past remains, with the original “We Are Open” sign still holding a place of pride inside.
More recently, the outdoor area has been expanded, creating even more space for guests to relax and enjoy the lively Amigos vibe. As the surrounding neighbourhood continues to grow and evolve, we’re excited to see the next chapter of the Invercargill story unfold.
Amigos Dunedin opened in 2021, bringing our lively Mexican-inspired flavours to the heart of the city.
Located on Bath Street, just a block from the Octagon, we’re right in the middle of central Dunedin and an easy stop for lunch, dinner or a night out.
Step inside and you’ll find a restaurant full of character, with quirky design touches, suspended doors and our one-of-a-kind indoor “outdoor” area. Whether you’re catching up over tacos, grabbing lunch or settling in for margaritas and dinner with friends, there’s always a good excuse to make it Amigos.
Gore joined the Amigos story in October 2024.
Set in the heart of town near the famous Gore Trout, the restaurant has made its home in one of the area’s most iconic historic buildings.
Originally constructed in the 1870s and once home to one of Southland’s oldest pubs, the space retains many of its original features. A structural glass floor offers guests a glimpse into the old beer cellar below, while artwork from local Gore artists brings colour and personality to the interior.
Whether you’re a longtime local or simply passing through, Amigos Gore offers a welcoming atmosphere where history, bold flavours and good times come together.
